Ian Tornay/ Four Seasons of Plein Air Landscape

Bowery Gallery is delighted to announce Ian Tornay’s exhibit of recent paintings  which opens Tuesday, April 25, and continues through May 20, 2017.  It runs concurrently with Nicole Maynard-Sahar’s exhibit.

Tornay, who paints landscapes in and around Philadelphia, combines keen observation of nature with a  unique confidence in paint handling.  In oil paintings of creeks,  Tornay works with rhythmic brushstrokes and intensified color to evoke nature’s structures.

His  landscapes offer a straightforward approach with an impressionist’s spontaneity and a romanticist’s lyricism.

Tornay avoids imposing preconceived strategies onto the canvas. Instead his brushwork and color harmony elicits nature’s grand or intimate moments. The brush strokes contrast general with specific, near with far, calm with energetic; he does so with careful observation and prolonged contemplation.

For Tornay, painting brings a sense of connection with the environment.  He enjoys exploring new places and, also, returning to old haunts in Maine, Vermont and Rhode Island.  Following the example of Cezanne and other masters he returns numerous times to the same motif.

In the Bowery show Tornay will exhibit views of pristine Lake Galena in rural Pennsylvania,  along with  street views of Philadelphia.  In his cityscapes he depicts the gritty, dilapidated charm of old Philadelphia streets.

Tornay will,  also, be showing new still life paintings created in his Germantown, Philadelphia studio.  These paintings capture the sensuality of domestic arrangements inside a Victorian carriage house.

His still lives,  are exhibited nationally with Zeuxis, an association of still life painters . He is  currently in a show running April 3 – May 31 at the Windgate Art and Design gallery,  University of Arkansas.  Earlier this year his work was included  in the traveling  exhibit at the Toni and Stuart B. Young Gallery,   Delaware College of Art & Design,   and at the Painting Center in NYC.
