The word “process” refers to not only the materials and means of producing
a work of art; it also traces the journey from a work’s initial inception to its
finished state, recording the artist’s every thought and feeling along the way.
While traditional artists tried to conceal process beneath a work’s surface,
the forerunners of Modernism brought brushstroke, color, rhythm, line,
and the duality between flatness vs depth to the fore. The artists in Process
of Discovery pick up their trail, looking to pictorial investigations for a fuller
expression of the complexity, changeability, poetry and mystery of life.
Whether produced from observation, imagination, or a combination of the
two, their 32 works in the show seek, as Matisse put it, the “condensation
of sensations which constitutes a picture.”
Below are selected images of works in the show.
