Downeast- New Work by Iris Osterman

Exhibition dates: November 1 – 26, 2022

Opening Reception: Saturday, November 5, 2022, 3-6 PM

The Bowery Gallery is pleased to present paintings by Iris Osterman. In this new body of work Osterman uses the coastline of New England as a touchstone, a familiar landscape embedded in memory.

She writes: “Since childhood the sight of the ocean and rocky border has always brought comfort. I would like to bring the smell of salt air into the room.”  As Joan Mitchell put it: “I carry my landscape around with me.”

Maine Edge”, 26″ x 50″, oil on canvas, 2021

The artist uses oils, filling large canvases with energetic line and expansive planes. The small gouache studies and monotypes reflect a similar attention to the pattern of land, sea and sky.

“Penobscot Bay, Low Tide”, 34″ x 44″, oil on canvas, 2021

Osterman has shown her work in numerous one-person and group exhibitions in Massachusetts and nationally. Most recently she has exhibited at the Attleboro Arts Museum, Attleboro, MA and the Concord Center for the Visual Arts, Concord, MA.
