Bowery Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of Jeremy Long: Recent Work, the first show in the gallery’s new space. Long’s second solo exhibition features paintings depicting domestic scenes of his family. In the largest painting, figures fill the space in a mastery reminiscent of 17th century Dutch painting.
Within such realized spaces a plasticity undermines the known framework of the historic reincarnation. Long expands his study within a second body of smaller works where forms subtly overtake the narrative with rhythms in the constructed space. Long’s nod at cubism and Hans Hofmann’s plasticity moves beyond modernism. His talent for depicting the real while playfully abstracting space is nuanced within the colorful shapes, patterns and textures that he creates.
Within the exhibition catalogue Stanley Lewis explains the painting process as “Jeremy has reversed the “everything at once” thing. Now his abstracted versions are his dominant reality”. Lewis goes on to say:
“During the last 15 years or so Jeremy has been producing very large, completely realized, extremely complicated figure paintings of his family interacting in actual rooms of his house. There is a new version of one of these paintings in this show. These are truly impressive achievements. He has brought realism to a new level with the underpinning of real structure. They are there to be seen”.
Jeremy Long describes his work as “an attempt to expand a figure or object from within so that it can have a profound effect throughout the space of the picture.” The paintings present the appearance of a unique reality with an affinity and sense of place while exploring an idea of perfected balance through structure of parts.
Jeremy Long: Recent Works is open Tuesdays through Saturdays 11 AM to 6 PM. For more information, visit http://www.bowerygallery.org or call 646-230-6655.
