Bowery Gallery 31st Annual Juried Exhibition

Bowery Gallery is pleased to present its annual national juried exhibition, on view at the gallery in its new 27th Street location from August 2 through August 20, 2022. The juror for the show, which comprises two-dimensional works by 35 artists living and working across the United States, is Lance Esplund, author of “The Art of Looking : How to Read Modern and Contemporary Art, How to Read Modern and Contemporary Art” (Basic Books). Mr. Esplund is currently an art critic for The Wall Street Journal. He was the U.S. art critic for Bloomberg News; chief art critic for the New York Sun; and the New York correspondent and an editorial board member at Modern Painters. Mr. Esplund has taught at Parsons, Rider University, and Queens College. He has served on a Pulitzer prize committee and been a guest critic at the New York Studio School. Mr. Esplund’s writing on art has appeared in numerous publications, including Air MailArt in AmericaThe AtlanticHarper’s, The New Republic, and Threepenny Review, among others.

Gallerygoers will encounter artists showing for the first time in New York, as well as artists in mid-career. The thirty-five artists chosen by Mr. Esplund live in all parts of the US, and they work in oils, watercolor, gouache, pastel, and mixed media. The eclectic mix of styles—abstract and figurative—reflects the approach that has characterized the gallery in its more than fifty years in New York. Bowery exhibitions have been discussed in articles and reviews in publications including The New York TimesThe New YorkerThe New RepublicThe New Criterionartcritical.com, Art in America, and Arts.

The exhibition continues through August 20.

Founded in 1969, Bowery Gallery has been showing contemporary art of the highest quality for more than six decades. Bowery Gallery is a cooperative, founded by artists and directed by the collective decision making of its member artists. From its beginnings, Bowery Gallery has been a force for the expansion of art’s traditions in a venue unconstrained by commercial pressures. Named after its original location, Bowery Gallery is now located in the heart of the Chelsea art district.
